Akiyama no Roushya is a small, home-based kennel and preservation effort for the Kishu Ken and the Shikoku Ken, two of Japan's rarest native hunting breeds. In the early days of the kennel, we bred to provide quality pets and prospective performance or show dogs which fit the NIPPO standard. We have since tightened our opinions and outlook to only breed for ourselves and minimize the number of puppies we are producing.
Our dogs are all pets first and foremost, live in the house with us and accompany us through all walks of life. This often means making difficult choices about which dogs to retain for breeding and which dogs to let go. In an effort to retain as many dogs as possible in the effective population size from our relatively small litters and the small number of litters being produced in the USA overall. Thus, we utilize a couple different types of placements. Use the chart to the right to help find the type of placement you may be looking for. |
PET & PERFORMANCE HOMES
A regular pet or performance puppy placement is our full rights contract-bound placement. Akiyama no Roushya registers all dogs on full rights and at this time we do not require mandatory desexing but we do require contracts with each placement which barrs all these dogs from breeding unless expressly agreed upon in writing after health testing and maturity. This is what most "regular" pet homes are looking for when they are looking for a puppy.
The cost of a well-bred pet or performance puppy is $2500 USD. These puppies are AKC & NIPPO registered and may be UKC registered upon request or may be registered as a litter depending on the parents' UKC registration status. Puppies are fully and appropriately vaccinated and dewormed by a veterinarian before leaving. All puppies produced are also genetested with Embark Veterinary to provide puppy owners with individual health information on their puppy. Parents to Akiyama no Roushya puppies meet parent club health testing requirements and are titled in at least one area unless an outside stud is used. The cost of every Akiyama no Roushya puppy goes directly into that puppy and the dogs at Akiyama no Roushya.
Transportation is not included in this cost. While the veterinary checks for health certificates to fly or other such veterinary care is included in the cost of the puppy, cost of transportation is not. Akiyama no Roushya is willing to fly puppies cargo or accompanied within the US or internationally. We encourage owners pick up their puppies in person and spend a day meeting their puppy's family, however. Because of this preference, we will provide preferential access to homes within the Pacific Northwest.
All puppies are placed on contract to protect both the puppy and the puppy owner. Akiyama no Roushya does not require puppies be spayed and neutered by a particular age at this time but each contract does include a non-breeding agreement barring breeding of any Akiyama no Roushya puppy unless certain criteria are met. This clause was written this way to encourage owners who may obtain a pet or performance puppy and later decide they would like to show their dog, or decide later that they may want to assist Akiyama no Roushya as a preservation home. At any time the pet or performance home may discuss changing their dog's agreement with Akiyama no Roushya.
Akiyama no Roushya reserves the right to decline changing a pet or performance puppy's agreement or contract and will always provide a written reason for such a decision as well as possible compromises or referrals to breeders which may better suit the pet or performance home's future goals.

GUARDIAN HOME
A guardian home is one which does not appear on their dog's paperwork. All paperwork and microchip information stays in Akiyama no Roushya's name and possession. The guardian home is responsible for all regular dog ownership responsibilities such as the cost of regular veterinary care and feeding but allows Akiyama no Roushya to take their dog (accompanied or unaccompanied) for arranged shows and performance events.
All health testing and breeding costs are the responsibility of Akiyama no Roushya. A guardian home is expected to allow Akiyama no Roushya breeding access to their dog in exchange for a greatly decreased cost. Guardian homes will be offered when Akiyama no Roushya would like to keep or grow out a puppy prospect. If a guardian home placement is determined to not be of breeding quality, the guardian home may be offered first deferral to keep the guardian placement as their pet.
This is an option for those who want to help preserve a rare breed but aren't sure if they're ready to be active in sports and shows or are not interested in building their own kennel.

CO-OWN HOMES
A co-own home is one which appears on their dog's paperwork. They are listed as owners on all registration paperwork with the exception of NIPPO (which does not recognize co-owners.) These homes are expected to give Akiyama no Roushya two (2) breedings from their dog and campaign their dog either in the show ring, the performance ring, or prove them via various working venues.
In exchange, Akiyama no Roushya pays for all health testing and provides the co-own dog at a slightly lower cost for the initial placement. Akiyama no Roushya will reimburse co-owners for specialty show entries and title application fees. When a co-ownership has been fulfilled, all paperwork will be signed over to the co-owner who then becomes the defacto owner. In Shikoku Ken, Akiyama no Roushya is currently requiring dogs become desexed after the co-ownership is nullified or fulfilled.
This is an option for those who want to be active in sports and shows or want to build a foundation for their own kennel.

RETIRED/REHOMED ADULTS & OLDER PUPPIES
A retired adult or rehomed puppy or adult placement is a dog which has either lived their life at Akiyama no Roushya and is being placed in a retirement home to allow them a more sedentary life than our fast-paced household in their golden years or a puppy/adult formerly placed by Akiyama no Roushya which has been returned. These dogs are placed for their desexing cost (when applicable) and transportation.
These dogs are a great option for those who do not want to raise puppies or want a calmer adult dog who has already had training.
If you are interested in an older puppy or adult dog, please visit our Available Dogs page now.

In order to be considered for a Kishu Ken or Shikoku Ken from Akiyama no Roushya, you must file a Puppy Questionnaire. This will help us better find the perfect puppy for you and your situation. On this form, we ask about living situation and puppy preferences to help open dialogue and partner you with an ideal pup.
Filling out this questionnaire will automatically put you on our contact list - that is, our mailing list for kennel updates. In order to get on our waiting list for a puppy, you will need to both be approved via email or phone correspondence ("interview") and submit a puppy holding fee of $500 USD. This holding fee is good for any litter produced at Akiyama no Roushya, it does not expire, and goes toward the price of the puppy selected for you based on your preferences.
You will receive a link to submit a puppy holding fee only after submitting an approved questionnaire.
PLEASE NOTE: puppies are not made-to-order. I request information on your puppy preferences to help match you behaviorally and aesthetically with a puppy you will enjoy. I do my best to take all wishes and personality requirements into account. When reaching out for a Kishu Ken or Shikoku Ken puppy, keep in mind you may be offered or matched with a puppy that does not meet all your criteria.
In cases of missing criteria Akiyama no Roushya matches puppies with homes based on their BASELINE PERSONALITY AND TEMPERAMENT FIRST if the dog is to be a pet. This means you may be offered a male dog though you wanted a female if the temperament or personalities of the females are not appropriate for your household. It may mean you are offered a red sesame puppy even though you wanted a black sesame because the personality of the red sesame is a better fit. Puppy homes reserve the right to decline the puppy offered for any reason and may skip up to 3 offered puppies/litters before a deposit will be returned and a referral to another breeder will be given.
